In 1876, George and Betsy Anne Jakeman left Oxfordshire, England to settle in Oxford County in Upper Canada (Ontario), Canada. There, the Jakemans learned about maple syrup from local Native Canadians, who taught them how to collect the sap from maple trees in the early spring and boil it down in an iron kettle over an open wood fire until it was a syrupy golden brown.
The family tradition started by George and Betsy Anne in 1876 continues today with great grandchildren Bob and Bruce Jakeman who, along with their wives Mary and Lynda, produce some of Ontario's finest maple syrup from over 1,000 taps. All maple sap is collected by plastic pipeline and transported to the Jakeman sugar shanty. The sap is then boiled in a modern steam evaporator powered by natural gas, and finished on a steam-heated pan. Finally, the maple syrup is graded, filtered and bottled for use throughout the year.
Canadiana Collections is pleased to offer a selection of Jakeman's maple syrup and maple syrup products for your culinary pleasure.

About Maple Syrup
Unique to the Great Lakes region of North America and made from the tree whose leaf adorns the Canadian flag, pure maple syrup is truly Nature's sweetener. Maple syrup is graded by colour: the lighter the syrup, the higher the grade, and
the more subtle the flavour. You can use maple syrup as a topping on pancakes, waffles, french toast, ice cream, fresh fruit and yogurt. Or try maple butter on muffins, bagels or toast. Maple syrup is also an excellent sweetener for breakfast cereals, baking or beverages. Share your memories by sending a gift of maple syrup!
