Welcome to Canada's newest territory! Nunavut, "Our Land", where fiords grace the landscape, polar bears roam the floe edge and Northern Lights dance in the sky.

Nunavut

The birth of Nunavut in 1999 gave the Inuit of Canada's eastern and central Arctic an opportunity to proudly showcase their culture and land well into the new millennium. Encompassing an area of 2.1 million square kilometers -- that's 1/4 the size of the United States -- Nunavut truly has something for everyone!

Canadiana Collections, working with the Nunavut Development Corporation, is proud to be able to offer some special Nunavut Collections that are all hand-made by various artisans of the True North. We have provided a map of Nunavut so that you can discover for yourself the origin of the treasures we offer.

Nunavut has and still is developing and encouraging new Artisans.  These men and women come from various areas throughout the enormous area we know as Nunavut.  Be sure and check your atlas and observe this wonderful Canadian territory made up of islands dotting our rugged but fragile northern boundary.

We have decided to include a group of various interesting and unique gift items which we are confident will give you enjoyment as a personal gift or a gift for that special friend.  The snow goggles for a keen cross country skier should be a “snow stopper”!  After the ski a rest by the fire in the fleece robe! The Musk-Ox leather set would be nice for the new graduate ready to start work.

We will be adding more items to the Nunavut Gift Collection as they become available.

Snow Goggles
Code: N-5150
$89.00

Snow Goggles

One size fits all

Traditional Inuit Iggaak (snow goggles) made from caribou antler and sinew in the community of Pangnirtung. Used to prevent snow blindness, "a dangerous and extremely painful condition caused by the reflection of strong spring light off the snow. The narrow slits in the goggles provide excellent protection. Gunpowder or soot mixed with oil and rubbed on the outside cuts down the glare even more." (from Things Made by Inuit, Fédération des coopératives du Nouveau-Québec)
